Subway has embarked on an ambitious effort to modernize its classic sandwich lineup, and it has no plans to slow down anytime soon.
The chain is expanding its Subway Series menu, which it claims features the “best sandwiches in Subway history.” Six new artisanal sandwich alternatives are now available in eateries statewide.
Subway debuted its Subway Series menu in July 2022, offering premium sandwiches made with “expertly crafted” combinations of proteins, cheese, sauces, and vegetables.
This was a significant departure in Subway’s brand, as the firm had previously depended on build-your-own, customized sandwiches rather than sandwiches with predetermined components.
Four of the new Subway Series sandwiches are enhanced versions of popular menu items: Sweet Onion Teriyaki, Italian B.M.T., Chicken & Bacon Ranch, and Spicy Italian.
The improved versions are all distinguished from the original versions by their slightly revised names. The Subway Series menu, for example, features a revised version of the Sweet Onion Teriyaki sandwich dubbed the “All-Pro Sweet Onion Teriyaki.”
The new Italian BMT is branded the “Ultimate B.M.T,” the Chicken & Bacon Ranch is called the “Elite Chicken & Bacon Ranch,” and the Spicy Italian is called the “Hotshot Italiano.”
While the enhanced sandwiches retain some of the original versions’ essential features, Subway stated that it has made improvements to make them more “craveable.
“For example, the classic customizable Spicy Italian pizza includes pepperoni and Genoa salami, as well as the customer’s preferred cheese, vegetables, and sauce.
The improved “Hotshot Italiano” sandwich on Subway’s Artisan Italian bread comes with spicy pepperoni, Genoa salami, provolone cheese, jalapeño peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, and MVP Parmesan Vinaigrette.
The “All-Pro Sweet Onion Teriyaki” sub consists of grilled chicken strips marinated in Subway’s Sweet Onion Teriyaki Sauce, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and red onions served on toasted Hearty Multigrain bread.
Meanwhile, the “Ultimate B.M.T” combines Genoa salami, spicy pepperoni, Black Forest ham, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, and the MVP Parmesan Vinaigrette on Artisan Italian bread.
The “Elite Chicken & Bacon Ranch” consists of rotisserie-style chicken, melted Monterey cheddar cheese, hickory-smoked bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, and Peppercorn Ranch on Artisan Italian bread.
The final two Subway Series are completely new to the Subway menu. The Pickleball Club, which Subway first unveiled in March, is a toasted sub on Artisan Italian bread topped with thin-sliced Black Forest ham, bacon, American cheese, and a brand-new honey mustard sauce that is only available with this sub.
The other is the Teriyaki Blitz, a toasted sub with beef marinated in Subway’s Sweet Onion Teriyaki sauce, American cheese, green peppers, and red onions served on Hearty Multigrain bread.
The Subway Series upgrade, the first since its inception last year, could be a profitable chance for the business, given its previous success with the special menu.
Several months after the Subway Series menu was introduced, Subway reported an 8.4% increase in same-store sales in the third quarter of 2022 due to the new signature sandwiches.
And, in today’s announcement regarding the expanded Subway Series menu, the business said it contributed to record-breaking sales in 2022.
The Subway Series’ performance reflects a broader trend of recovery for the sandwich chain following a couple of difficult years.
The corporation failed to regain sales following the COVID-19 epidemic and contracted fast in 2021 as franchisees closed approximately 1,000 locations.
In a promising rebound, Subway announced plans to accelerate new restaurant openings in North America this year and recently recorded double-digit improvements in same-store sales in North America and globally in the first quarter of 2023.
